Newton Castle
In the 1660s Newton Castle was requisitioned by the government to use as a garrison for soldiers used in the suppression of the Covenanters. After the Pentland Rising, the authorities feared rebellion in the west and 450 troopers were quartered in Ayr, Newton Castle being used as the headquarters for their commanders.
Newton Castle was demolished around 1790. Its site is now part of a car park adjacent to the King Street roundabout, Newton-upon-Ayr.
