Thomas Weir

Thomas Weir was the tenant farmer at Waterside (NS 790370), near to Skellyhill. He was active at the Battle of Drumclog, 1 June 1679. He carried one of the Covenanter banners at the battle. Whilst charging on horseback against Graham of Claverhouse he was wounded but he 'pursued as long as he was able, and then fell'. He died three days later.

The gravestone also commemorates Gavin Weir in Waterside (died 25 July 1732, aged 79). His name was added to the fugitive list in 1684 but he survived the Killing Times.

The Weir gravestone is a flat slab lying level with the grass. It was repaired in 1833.

The inscription reads:

Here lies

THOMAS WEIR

who was shot in a rencounter

at Drumclog June 1st 1679

by bloody Graham of

Claverhouse for his

adherence to the Word of

God and Scotlands

Covenanted work of 

Reformation. Rev. XII 2

As also Gavin Weir

in Waterside who departed

this life July 25 1732

Aged 79

Repaired by a few

friends to the

Covenanter Cause

1833
