Castle Caldwell

Castle Caldwell, or Caldwell House, was owned by the Mure family. William Mure of Caldwell was attainted for joining the Covenanters. He had to flee to Holland. His estates were forfeit to the Crown and were granted to General Tam Dalzell of the Binns.

WIlliam Mure was married in 1655 to Barbara Cuninghame, daughter of Sir WIlliam Cuninghame, 1st Baronet of Cuninghamehead. Barbara and two of her daughters were captured by the dragoons and imprisoned in Blackness Castle.

After the Glorious Revolution, the estates of Caldwell were restored to the Mures by an Acto of Parliament, dated 19 July 1690.
