The cylindrical well-head is located just off the A71, at the entrance to Hillhead farm. The well-head has a door and conical roof.

Trumpeter's Well

 

Immediately following the Battleof Drumclog, John Graham of Claverhouse was making a hasty retreat. His own horse had been killed and he took the horse of his trumpeter. This was a lad of fourteen years. Tradition claims that the trumpeter was subsequntly killed, and his body was thrown down the well.
