Pentland Rising

Two Cumnock men were martyred for their part in the rising in 1666. Patrick McNaught was indicted in 1667, and George Crawford, a weaver, was executed in December 1666.

 

Deerness Martyrs

Two Covenanters from Cumniock were drowned at Deerness in Orkney in 1679:

  • John Gemmell
  • Jamies Mirrie

 

Blue Tower Inn - Rev David Houston was held overnight prior to being taken to Edinburgh for trial. The Covenanters of the area ambushed the soldiers at bello Path the following day.

Adam Brown Todd - Covenanter historian, he lived in the town for many years and is buried in the new cemetery, Glaisnock Street.
