John Mathieson

 

John Mathieson was the tenant of Rosehill farm (NX 883925). He was a supporter of the Covenant and was sentenced to banishment on 19 June 1684, 'for reset and converse with rebels found guilty by their confession judicially adhered to, to be transported to the plantations'. He was held in prison for a time before being sent to Carolina from Greenock. He managed to escape and travelled through America to New York. He was able to return to Scotland in the autumn of 1687. He died on 1 October 1709. His dying testimony was published in 1806.
