of the SCMA

The SCMA has been active for over 35 years in protecting, restoring or replacing monuments and memorials to the Covenanters. Volunteers carry out basic work, such as removing litter, painting railings or digging out weeds, whereas the association's funds are used to employ professional stonemasons or builders where required. The following paragraphs illustrate some of the recent work carried out.

Tarbolton Churchyard, Ayrshire
Erection of replacement memorial to William Shillilaw, martyred nearby in 1685. In association with Tarbolton Parish Church, 2000.

Dumfries: St Michael's Churchyard
Erection of new sandstone memorial in memory of Revd. William Veitch, Covenanting minister. 2001.

Dalserf Parish Churchyard, Lanarkshire
Restoration of obelisk in memory of Rev. John MacMillan, Covenanting Minister, 2000-2.

Cumnock Old Cemetery, Ayrshire
Erection of new memorial to David Dun & Simon Paterson, June 2002.

East Kilbride, Lanarkshire
Erection of new memorial to ten martyrs from parish of East Kilbride, October 2002, in association with South Lanarkshire Council.

Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire
Erection of new gravestone to Thomas Linning, replacing old stone, October 2002, in association with South Lanarkshire Council.

Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire
Erection of modern steel sculpture in memory of the Covenanters, and of the Pentland Rising. Donated and made by Bill Dunigan, 2004.

Earnock Graves, Hamilton
Planting of Scots Pine tree to replace one damaged by vandals. 2005

Greyfriars Martyrs Memorial, Edinburgh
Finance of restoration of martyrs' memorial, addition of plaque and new leaflets, in association with Greyfriars Kirkyard Trust, 2005.
